28.09.21 Update: Sales for Issue One have now closed as there’s a handful of copies left. If you would like to purchase a copy of Issue One, please see the Issue One and Two bundle via our shop.

3.08.21 Update: Thanks to you, Issue One sold out within days of being published so we’ve reprinted 300 extra copies.

Our first print issue is a 60-page celebration of First Nations, Black and People of Colour through the lens of food and culture.

The theme of our first issue is ‘Country’ in tribute to the First Nations people of so-called Australia. The people whose land we have settled on, who we still owe so much to. Colournary is based on the Kulin Nation, and we would like to thank the Wurundjeri people who are the Traditional Owners of the land.

Our theme is also in recognition of what Country means to Black and People of Colour who have settled in Australia. Those who deal with the effects of colonisation or the way Country changed meaning for them upon migration. Country is the giver of life, it is our provider. It’s where our food and drink comes from, and when it suffers we suffer with it.

The magazine is limited to a print run of 300 copies and highlights stories, illustrations and photos from a diverse pool of people who have lived experiences with the cuisines they delve into. We’re also excited to feature recipes from acclaimed Naarm (Melbourne) chefs like Harry Mangat (Biji Dining), Tom Sarafian (Bar Saracen) and John Rivera (Kariton Sorbetes, Lûmé) to name a few.

Funds raised have gone towards First Nations, Black and PoC chefs, writers, illustrators, designers, printers and photographers.

The magazine was proudly published on July 31, 2021.

Five percent of sales will go towards Common Ground, a First Nations-led not-for-profit that works towards shaping a society that centres First Nations people by amplifying knowledge, cultures and stories.
